About a couple of years ago, Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott actually talked about an experimental project where an AI, trained on code in GitHub, creates simple programs (function bodies) out of a given description.




It was quite an easy task and even easier demonstration, but it raises a concern upon the long-term impacts and implications of AI.




Although, while AI can create and execute some simpler programs using descriptions, could they also implement complex code, like creating a CRM software on its own just by reading the requirements? Maybe in the later future but not anytime soon!




So one thing is for sure, that the complex coding tasks need expert human minds and though AI can assist them in it and can liberate the developers from doing mundane tasks like creating simple programs, it’s not going to be THE END for coding jobs.




But we can definitely expect programming to get automated, and the role of software developers will also change with this automation.




In the long run, applications will code themselves, and it will fall down on the developers how well they can describe the problem to AI and how can they implement their problem-solving skills to extract the maximum out of the smart machine.

COVID-19, a virus, or disease also if you may call it, came into existence in 2019. It started spreading from Wuhan, China to almost every corner of the world.

From having led to drastic loss of human lives to impacting the economy of the country big time to putting a challenge to public health and food departments too, its impact was huge since it began.

Little did everyone know that the virus would soon become a pandemic and create chaos and havoc worldwide. The pandemic resulted in compelling everyone to stay inside their homes, markets were completely shut except for essential services and in the end, lives had come to a halt.

Back in 2021 mid, there was a sigh of relief when suddenly the cases dropped drastically and things were back to basic once again. But was this a long term thing really? Probably, NO!

Let’s have a look at how we can do this or what we can do to escape from going to the state of completely shut down and extreme contingencies-

- **By taking precautions-** We are aware of the consequences, symptom sand even the ways of how we can protect ourselves. So, if one is taking the proper precautions, we can save ourselves from the disease.
- **By keeping updates-** Lockdown is not needed if we are keeping ourselves updated with the news. We need to take things seriously and the results will be good.
- **By adhering to the rule and guidelines of government —** The government is trying its best to bring down a calm in this chaotic situation overall, and we should all we can to support them in stopping this virus from taking a toll on our lives all over again.

**Hi** there,



I’m a designer in the software industry for many years. I have seen all sorts of designs throughout my career, from the best ones to the worst ones.




The one thing I have learned from my experience is that many people confuse Universal Design with accessibility, and I used to be one of those. It took me a while to understand it. Let me brief you on what I have understood over the years-



Universal design is inclusive of accessibility, but not solely focused on it. Rather, Universal Design expands the definition of accessibility by including all persons, not only persons with disabilities.



An important step is to change how one perceives what needs to be done to make content accessible. Think of the mobile user, for example, how can content be delivered to fit their needs? A shift in thinking about addressing these concerns from the context of accessibility towards the context of access is necessary.

I’m going to talk throughout this blog about what it means by a Universal Design, how accessibility plays a role in web designing, and what points are to be remembered to create a good design. So, let’s dive in-



## What is a Universal Design?



Universal design is the composition of an environment so that it can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability.



It’s a fundamental condition of good design. If one environment is accessible, usable, convenient and a pleasure to use, everyone benefits from it.



## 7 Principles of Universal Designs!



The 7 Principles of Universal Design were developed in 1997 by a working group of architects, product designers, engineers and environmental design researchers, led by the late Ronald Mace in the North Carolina State University.



The purpose of these principles is to guide the design of environments, products and communications.



According to the Center for Universal Design at NCSU, the Principles apply to evaluate existing designs, guide the design process and educate both designers and consumers about the characteristics of more usable products and environments.



Let’s see what these principles are-



- **Equitable use:** The design should have diverse abilities to make it marketable to the customers.
- **Flexibility:** A design should contain a wide range of personal preferences and choices of methods to provide flexibility in using it.
- **Simple & intuitive:** Make sure your design is super easy to understand by the lowest of minds.
- **Perceptible information:** The design should render all the necessary information efficiently to the user, irrespective of the ambience and users’ sensory abilities. It should be able to express itself.
- **Tolerance for error:** The design should be able to reduce risks and the adverse consequences of unintended actions.
- **Low physical effort:** The user should be able to navigate through the design with minimal effort and exhaustion.
- **Size and space for approach:** Appropriate size and space is provided for approach, reach, manipulation, and use regardless of user’s body size, posture, or mobility.

## What is Accessibility in UX/UI Designing?

We define a great user experience as a combination of better usability, great graphic design and easy accessibility.



Accessibility is the concept of whether a product or service is usable by everyone-however they encounter it.



The laws of accessibility exist to allow users of all abilities to understand, use and enjoy the web. A great example of an accessible design would be any content or functionality that is fully available to and usable by people with disabilities.



As designers, it is our responsibility to make sure we design in a way that is usable to all users irrespective of their situation, abilities, or context. Every designer should try to accommodate all potential users in many contexts of use anyway. To do so has firm benefits-notably better designs for all.



>Universal design is a plan, and the way we measure that plan is accessibility.



These are the three factors that rate your design in terms of accessibility-



- **Completion-** Whether the task is achievable in the way user expects.
- **Efficiency-** The minimum possible time it takes for the user to navigate through what’s he looking for and carry out the process.
- **Satisfaction-** Is the entire experience from start to end delightful?


Accessibility is all about removing barriers and providing the benefits of technology for everyone.

## Why accessibility is important in web designs?



Today, everything we see and wherever we see, it is connected to the web and the internet in one way or another. Whether it’s education, employment, government, commerce, health care, recreation, or else, every field now have an online presence.




Therefore, it becomes essential to see to it that what we see on the web is easy to understand and navigate to everyone. This, in turn, ensures equal exploring opportunities for people with disabilities so that they can participate actively in society.



An accessible website is often one of the easiest ways to do business with people who cannot read print material, who face difficulty going to a physical store or mall, etc. Furthermore, what you do for accessibility overlaps with other best practices such as mobile web design, usability, and Search Engine Optimization (SEO).




Here are some quick tips to make your design better accessible-




- Keep your navigation predictable, as every icon you use and how you use it matters a great deal.
- Make your text big, bold, organized, and most importantly, easier to read.
- Avoid content that can trigger unfriendly reactions from someone. Your design should be safe for every user’s eyes.
- To make it accessible to everyone, make your design compatible with keyboard alone and even without one.

Universal Designs — There’s more to UI/UX than you know!

**W**hy do you think we have hundreds of JavaScript frameworks and even more libraries in the developer’s community?



To ease the development process, of course!



But whenever we download a new library, it only increases the bundle size, which in turn decreases application performance and speed. And when it comes to large-scale and complex sites, this becomes the greatest of issues as this bundle size reaches unacceptably high levels.



This entirely fails the purpose of using any modern library or tool in the first place, and this is where we see Astro come for front-line rescue.

When we talk about partial hydration, this is the concept behind the superfast-speed and high performance of Astro. It is also referred to by terms like ‘progressive hydration’ or ‘progressive enhancement’.



There are some scenarios where you need to run JavaScript at the client-side. Some of these instances include-



- An image carousel
- In shopping carts for ‘Buy now’ button
- Auto-complete search bars



These are only a few examples; there can be more such cases where you have to run some JavaScript at the client-side.



Astro allows you to ship JavaScript whenever needed. What’s more, you can opt explicitly for those components which you want to run in the browser. Astro lets you hydrate only the required individual component without interrupting the rest of the static site. This is what partial hydration looks like!



So whenever you need to run a UI component in the browser, Astro enables you to load only that particular component (with dependencies) and while you're running it, the rest of your site remains as static HTML and runs as such.

While the conventional process is to build a website into client-side rendered JavaScript bundles which are then shipped to the user, the Island architecture brings a better and more effective approach to the table- To render static HTML pages on the server and add slots/placeholders around highly dynamic areas for interactivity. These slots contain server-rendered HTML output from the corresponding widgets, which can be hydrated and reused on the client-side into smaller widgets.



The server rendering in the Island model is not centered on improving SEO or UX but focuses upon how pages are rendered to the browser.

This in turn facilitates faster loading and rendering of lightweight components individually without being barred by other heavier components. Also, as this model isolates each page into separate units, any performance issue in one unit won’t cause any direct impact upon other units.

**T**he term ‘Atomic Designs’ has, of course, been inspired by Chemistry, and it introduces a new methodology for creating modular design systems, scalable and reusable components, and systems.



Usually, a designer designs web pages, but Atomic Design is the foundation of designing systems of components.



As we enter the Atomic Design modules, here are the five stages that we need to understand first-



- Atoms
- Molecules
- Organisms
- Templates
- Pages



Moving down the list, the designs get more complex and advanced. So, when we come to pages, we have a fully designed web page.

## Atomic Design Methodology



Atomic design methodology is not exactly a linear step-by-step process, but a phenomenal understanding of UI elements in terms of small units (atoms) and their collection. It was introduced by [Brad Frost](https://medium.com/@brad_frost/about).



We have all read in chemistry that matter is composed of atoms. An atom is the smallest unit inside an element, and when 2 or more elements come together, they form a molecule.



So, how do you relate these chemical terms in Atomic Designs?

- Atoms

An atom, as we understand from Chemistry, is the smallest unit of matter.



Here, atoms are the smallest and simplest meaningful elements of the user interface design, i.e. icons, labels, classes, buttons, inputs, etc. and when combined, they define functioning units, iconography and typography.




When you closely look at a page, you can easily break it down into several atoms. They are the most basic components of a design and can’t be split any further.




Left on their own, the atoms do not define a specific functionality and only when grouped together are able to depict the bigger picture.

### - Molecules

When two or more atoms bond together, they form a molecule. A molecule is therefore the most fundamental unit of the UI design that adds functionality to the page.



Molecules are simple, reusable, functional, and portable components that define the context of atoms in user interfaces.



In simple words, molecules are atoms stitched together to define a singular functionality. For instance, the search navigation is a molecule that consists of these atoms — search icon, input field, a label, and search button.



### - Organisms



An organism is further a combination of two or more molecules joined together and a relatively complex UI component. Organisms add to the solid base of the design and provide more distinct functionalities to the interface.




The organisms collectively demonstrate the role of smaller units like atoms and molecules in the broader aspect of the design. They are standalone components that can function independently without relying upon any other components and can be called several times once built.




The end result of a molecule might not interest you, but organisms are the first sign that your design is beginning to take a spectacular shape and delivers a profound visual effect.


### - Templates



A template is a group of organisms combined. It is the concrete form of a layout of a page that sets standards for the page template which will remain the same even when you make changes in the content inserted there in terms of placement, size, font, etc.



Basically, it’s the stage just before your final page comes into action. Templates are what can be considered as the backend layout of the page before putting the content.

### - Pages



All components checked, and the representative content put in place — this is what the final page looks like!



A page is the final stage of the design. It is what the user sees and experiences in the end. Here you see everything at once. All data, images and components are placed together to form a design that meets your goals and defines the purpose of your website.

### - Code consistency and reusability



These automatically designed pages are far easier to code than those created with conventional design methods. Once you define the atom and molecule elements, you can reuse the same code for every element across all pages. This way, you can easily see and identify what this particular code means, and where and why to use it.



This leaves so much space for consistency and the code, thus, delivered is easier to read and systematic.



### - Diverse options for customization



You have a long list of atoms, molecules and organisms inside your style guide, which leaves you with many options already. And if you want other elements, you can just customize the existing elements to get the results you desire.



There is no need to waste your time creating new atoms for the same instance, so, you can just tweak through the already available elements and create newer atoms out of those.
